Cities Forum supports the City of Murcia as a partner in the Interreg "JustGreen" project, an interregional cooperation focused on delivering a fair and inclusive green transition. As cities invest in greening and climate adaptation, there is a growing risk that the benefits, cooler streets, green space, healthier neighbourhoods, accrue unevenly; JustGreen addresses precisely this, placing equity and the needs of vulnerable groups at the centre of urban greening policy.
Our approach
Within the project, Cities Forum runs the local stakeholder engagement and peer-learning process for Murcia and connects it to a European consortium including cities such as Tallinn, Ghent, Katowice, Burgas and Rotterdam. Murcia hosted a partner and stakeholder meeting and organised good-practice visits to its own initiatives, Climate Refuges, a School Shading Programme and the Murcia Río riverfront project, while drawing lessons from partners on participatory budgeting, community engagement and the recovery of green areas. Successive stakeholder meetings advanced specific themes: a "Recognition" pillar focused on identifying vulnerable groups such as the elderly and low-income families for climate-adaptation priority, and later the flagship West Metropolitan Park and equitable access to green space, with a consortium meeting hosted in Ghent.
What we delivered
Cities Forum managed the engagement logistics and facilitation, venues, site visits along the Murcia Río / Conexión Sur corridor, and structured stakeholder sessions, and connected the work to New European Bauhaus practice. The firm also supported honest strategic decisions, including Murcia's assessment of an Interreg pilot-action with Rotterdam, Burgas and Katowice, from which the city ultimately stepped back owing to pre-financing constraints, a realistic reflection of the choices mid-sized municipalities face.
Impact
The project strengthens Murcia's capacity to deliver climate adaptation and urban greening in a socially just way, and embeds the city in a European peer-learning network on the green transition. For Cities Forum, JustGreen reinforces a growing portfolio at the intersection of climate adaptation, green infrastructure and social equity, and its role as a trusted delivery partner for European territorial-cooperation programmes.
