Smart-City Mentoring & Matchmaking for Canadian Municipalities

Cities Forum designed and implemented a structured mentoring and business-matchmaking programme connecting Spanish smart-city expertise with Canadian municipalities, with a particular focus on the Greater Toronto Area. Canadian local governments were seeking proven European approaches to sustainable mobility, digital services and city branding, while a mature cluster of Spanish administrations and technology providers was looking to internationalise. The programme was conceived as the bridge between that demand and that supply.

Our approach

At its core the initiative facilitated peer-to-peer exchange between senior officials, technology providers and innovation hubs from Spanish municipalities such as San Javier, Cartagena, Murcia and Torre Pacheco, and their Canadian counterparts. Cities Forum curated a blended journey of thematic webinars, individual coaching sessions led by its experts, and a major in-person programme built around the Smart City Expo World Congress 2021 in Barcelona and a series of follow-up events. The thematic scope was deliberately broad but practical: sustainable urban mobility systems, e-mobility and charging infrastructure, integrated city-branding strategies, smart-city master planning, and the procurement of technology-enabled municipal services.

What we delivered

For each participating Canadian city, the team developed tailored coaching plans, technical briefings on European regulatory frameworks and funding mechanisms, and curated B2B meetings matching concrete Canadian needs with Spanish solutions. A significant part of the effort went into the administrative and evidentiary backbone of the programme: performance-certification tracking, expert CV dossiers, and procurement reference packages documenting the service portfolio of the participating Spanish administrations, so that every match rested on verifiable credentials and comparable experience.

Impact

The initiative generated concrete commercial leads, multi-year municipal cooperation agreements, and, just as importantly, a reusable methodology for international smart-city matchmaking that Cities Forum has since applied in other markets. It confirmed the firm's role as a trusted broker between European urban-innovation ecosystems and North American local governments seeking to accelerate their digital and sustainability transitions, and it strengthened the transatlantic relationships that underpin Cities Forum's wider international activity. By pairing rigorous preparation with genuine relationship-building, the programme delivered outcomes that outlasted the events themselves, embedding lasting cooperation channels between Spanish and Canadian cities.
