MOVEA Tourism-Mobility Platform, Espadan-Mijares

Cities Forum delivered, under its MOVEA brand, a tourism-mobility platform and analytical programme for the Espadán-Mijares mancomunidad, a group of inland municipalities in the Sierra de Espadán natural-park area of Castellón. For rural and mountain destinations, understanding visitor flows and overnight stays is notoriously difficult yet essential for sustainable tourism planning; the project set out to give the mancomunidad exactly that intelligence, on a solid big-data footing.
Our approach
The assignment was structured around seven deliverables that took the work from analysis to an operational tool. A sequence of mobility-and-overnight-stay reports (informes de movilidad y pernoctaciones) built a progressively richer picture of who visits the territory, when, from where and for how long, culminating in a final synthesis and global-evaluation report. These were complemented by a structured dataset, a technical execution report documenting the contract, and a tourism-mobility platform delivered with a user manual so the mancomunidad could consult the results independently.
What we delivered
Methodologically, Cities Forum drew on Telefónica big-data mobility feeds and organised the analysis around representative day-types and a defined set of mobility indicators, with municipality-level breakdowns across the mancomunidad's villages. This allowed the small inland municipalities, places such as Fuentes de Ayódar, to see visitor and overnight-stay patterns they could never have measured with conventional surveys, and to compare dynamics across the territory and the seasons.
Impact
The platform gives the Espadán-Mijares mancomunidad an evidence base to plan sustainable tourism, distribute visitor pressure, target promotion and coordinate services across its municipalities. By making advanced mobile-data analytics accessible to a small rural administration, the project illustrates a core MOVEA proposition: that the same big-data techniques used in major cities can be adapted, proportionately and affordably, to help inland and rural territories manage tourism sustainably and protect the natural and cultural assets on which that tourism depends.
