Cities Forum provided technical assistance for the development and implementation of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and ICT solutions in Iraq and Kurdistan, under the World Bank-supported Transport Corridors Project (TCP). In a country rebuilding and modernising its infrastructure, smart transport technologies offer a powerful means to make roads safer, better connected and more efficiently managed; the assignment helped translate that opportunity into concrete ITS and ICT solutions along key transport corridors.
Our approach
The work supported improved road connectivity and road safety along strategic corridors, arteries that carry vital movements of people and goods and whose performance shapes the wider economy. Cities Forum's technical assistance spanned the development and implementation of ITS and ICT solutions, bringing to bear expertise in the technologies and systems that allow modern road networks to be monitored, managed and made safer: traffic management, incident detection and response, information systems, and the digital and communications backbone on which they depend. The emphasis on both development and implementation reflects a commitment to solutions that are not merely designed but actually deployed and operating on the ground.
What we delivered
Delivering ITS in the Iraqi and Kurdish context called for solutions attuned to local conditions, the state of existing infrastructure, institutional capacity, and the practical realities of implementation in a rebuilding environment. Cities Forum's role was to ensure that the technologies introduced were appropriate, workable and genuinely useful for improving connectivity and safety, rather than sophisticated systems ill-suited to the setting. Road safety, in particular, is a pressing concern where corridor upgrades can save lives, and the ITS solutions were oriented towards tangible improvements in how safely and reliably these corridors function.
Impact
The engagement helped Iraq and Kurdistan strengthen the safety, connectivity and management of their strategic transport corridors through modern intelligent-transport and ICT solutions, in support of the World Bank's Transport Corridors Project. For Cities Forum, it extended the firm's expertise into ITS and smart-mobility deployment in a challenging post-conflict and reconstruction context, and reinforced its capability to deliver technology-enabled transport solutions across a remarkably wide range of geographies and conditions.
